Deckerville Public Library History
The building that now houses the Deckerville Public Library originally served as an Episcopal Church constructed in 1880. It was a prefabricated structure shipped in and then transported to its current location by wagon.
In December 1923, during a meeting of the Women’s Club, a motion was introduced to establish a library for the Village of Deckerville. This led to a meeting of the Board of Managers at the Farmer’s State Bank of Deckerville on July 21, 1924. The meeting, presided over by Mrs. George B. Forrester, included eight members. Mrs. Clement proposed naming the new library the "Deckerville Public Library," a motion seconded by Mrs. McClusky. With $326.31 in its treasury, the corporation for the Deckerville Public Library was officially formed.
The group voted to purchase the former Episcopal Church and the lot on which it stood from the Diocese of Michigan for $250.00. The Women’s Club invited the Hypatian Club to join in establishing the library, and their combined efforts resulted in a collection of 300 books by the end of the year.
The corporation operated for 21 years before proposing that the library be transferred to the Village of Deckerville for a minimum of 25 years of public use. The Village Council approved the terms on November 5, 1945. On August 15, 1946, the library corporation was dissolved, and the library officially became village property.
Renovations took place in 1966, and in 1970 the exterior received white aluminum siding. Landscaping improvements followed in 1972.
In 1980, a major addition—designed to match the style of the original church—was constructed on the east side of the building. This expansion nearly tripled the library’s size and allowed for substantial growth of its collection.
The library became fully automated in 1999 with the introduction of a computerized system. In July 2005, it joined MeLCat, enabling participation in statewide interlibrary loan services.
In August 2014, the library undertook a significant carpeting replacement project. The entire collection had to be boxed, and shelving units were dismantled. Thanks to an outstanding team of volunteers, the library reopened just a week later with new carpeting and all books restored to the shelves.
In May 2015, the Deckerville Public Library launched a new library management system—Apollo by Biblionix—providing online access to the catalog and patron accounts.
